SYRACUSE, New York – The Onondaga women's basketball team has continued their success early this season, as the Lazers made the SUNY Adirondack Timberwolves their latest victims.
Onondaga went on quick 5-0 run for first 1:05 of the game forcing Adirondack to call timeout. The Lazers won the opening tip and took it right to the basket, setting the tempo seconds into the game.
The Lazers continued score coming of the timeout, but the Timberwolves hit the three to stop the run. Onondaga would not be chained down, as they came back a scored five points off a three by
Samantha Roberts and quick steal and layup by
Melissa Bakowski.
The Timberwolves couldn't really find their footing in the second; and Onondaga held a 26-12 lead to end the quarter.
SUNY Adirondack was able to settle down a bit in the second, but ultimately Onondaga was able to continue their offense dominance.
The Lazers (4-0) went into the locker room at halftime leading the Timberwolves 44-31, and never looked back 88-55 win over Region 3 foe SUNY Adirondack (4-2).
"I was pleased with our play today, as we had a tough game this past Sunday" said head coach
Mike Wheeler. "We talked about coming out with intensity, and I thought we were very good in the first half."
Bakowski lead the team with ten points at halftime, while
Jordan Vaught and
Morgan Deland had nine & eight points respectively in the first half.
"Adirondack went on a bit of a run in the second quarter, but we were able to get momentum back in the third and I was pleased with the way the girls finished the game" added Wheeler.
Onondaga came out firing in the third, scoring 27 points while only allowing one basket all quarter. The Lazers ran away with the game in the third, and finished the quarter with a 71-34 lead.
When asked about the team's defensive play, especially in the third quarter Wheeler added "We talked in the locker room at halftime about adjusting defensively, and the girls went out there and made the necessary plays to get the win."
Third game this season scoring 88 points, proving the Lazers are a team of consistency and are able to put up big numbers on a nightly basis.
Three players ended the evening with double-digit points, as Bakowski, Sam Roberts, and
Morgan Deland, each had 12 or more points. Deland had a team high 16 points, while Bakowski and Roberts each chipped in 12 apiece.
"I believe the system we play in allows us to have multiple scores, and really distribute the scoring throughout the roster." Wheeler said of his team's ability to spread out the scoring. "Players know in our system they are going to get the chance to score, and allows us to not have just one person, or two people have most of the scoring, instead we are able to spread it out amongst the roster."
Onondaga will be on the road this upcoming weekend, with games at Schenectady County CC and Fulton–Montgomery CC on Saturday & Sunday respectively; both games are set for 1pm.
