Box Score 4 The Onondaga Community College volleyball team extended its season-opening winning streak to seven games on Saturday at the Jefferson Community College Invitational in Watertown before losing its final two matches of the day. The Lazers began the day with a straight-set wins over Cayuga and Erie, respectively before falling in back-to-back three-set matches against Monroe and Corning.
With the split, Onondaga is now 7-2 on the season and will look for its eighth win at 6 p.m. on Wednesday when the Lazers host SUNY Broome in MSAC Conference action.
Onondaga made quick work of Cayuga in its opening match, dropping the Spartans 25-15, 25-16 before battling Erie to a 25-21, 25-18 win.
In their third game, the Lazers earned a hard-fought win in the opening set after climbing back to beat the tournament's eventual champion, Monroe, 27-25, but the Tribunes would bounce back in the second and third frames to seal the win.
After finishing second overall in its pool, Onondaga would face Corning in the semifinals. The Lazers looked dominate in the first set, outscoring the Red Barons, 25-15. After falling in the second set, Onondaga looked to put things away in the third and deciding set, but Corning had other ideas, winning the final set and the match to play for the championship.
Melissa Krak had a huge afternoon for the Lazers posting a combined 16 kills to go along with 27 digs. Freshman
Sydney Burritt compiled 10 kills, a team-high 31 digs, six service aces and two blocks while
Jessica Cost tallied 50 assists, 22 digs and five aces overall.
