Women’s Lacrosse Settles for NJCAA Runner-Up after Falling to Monroe in Championship Game

The nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College women's lacrosse team fell short of winning its third national championship on Sunday as the Lazers fell to top-ranked Monroe Community College, 17-10, in stormy conditions at David W. Murphy Field.

With the loss, Onondaga finished the season with a 14-3 record with all three losses coming at the hands of Monroe. The Tribunes captured their third consecutive national championship while completing a perfect 15-0 season.

The game would remain scoreless until the Lazers would draw first blood when Nicole DeVona scored on a feed from Cheyenne Burnam five minutes into the game at 25:13.

Onondaga would hold a 1-0 advantage until nearly 10 minutes into the half when Monroe finally went on the board for the first time in the contest. The score sparked a four-goal run by the Tribunes that gave them a 4-1 lead with 13:39 left in the half.2409

Just two minutes later, Kristyn Drake went end-to-end for the Lazers before finding the back of the next for an unassisted goal, making the score 4-2 in favor of Monroe.

Then with 8:46 remaining before the half, Burnam found DeVona for another Onondaga goal, putting the Lazers behind by only one goal.

Monroe and Onondaga would then spend the next five minutes of the game alternating scores twice; resulting in a 6-5 Tribunes lead with just over three minutes left in the frame.

Two quick goals from Monroe in the last 2:48 of the half, however, would send the Lazers into intermission trailing by three, 8-5.

After letting up an early second half goal to the Tribunes to go down 9-5, Onondaga battled back quickly as a Makenzie Annable pass set up Drake's second goal of the game with 21:57 left in the contest.

Trailing by three goals, the Lazers inched closer to Monroe less than two minutes later as DeVona tallied a player-advantage goal, putting Onondaga behind 9-7 with under 20 minutes remaining in the title match.

That would be as close as the Lazers would come to the Tribunes, however, as Monroe rattled off a five-goal run over the next nine minutes to take a 14-7 lead.

Annable, DeVona, and Megan Fero would all tally a goal for Onondaga over the course of the last 10 minutes of the contest but ultimately the Lazers would go on to fall to the Tribunes by a final score of 17-10.

DeVona led the way for the Lazers on offense as the sophomore scored four goals in the game and finished with 35 on the season.2408
