Box Score Jarred Hinkson headed home what turned out to be the game-winning goal as the Onondaga Community College men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Mohawk Valley Community College on Wednesday in the Lazers' season-opener.

Hinkson's tally came in the 64^th minute of play on the heels of a pass from Matt Perry.  The Hawks tried to close the gap as the game wore on, but Onondaga's defense led by goalie Chris Spaulding halted Mohawk Valley's advances.

In the first half of action, the Hawks struck first, scoring in the 19^th minute on a breakaway, but the lead would be short lived, however, as Romeo Kpolo corralled a pass from Joey Amato and danced around two defenders before blasting a shot that found nylon to tie the contest at one goal apiece.

Onondaga's defense front was nothing short of spectacular, limiting the Hawks to only four shots on goal.  The Lazers played well on the offensive end of the field as well, tallying 18 shots as a team.

Spaulding earned his first win of the season after making four saves in goal, while Ben Jackson Nate Waite and Hinkson posted a team-high three shots.   
 
The Lazers will return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday when they travel to SUNY Adirondack.
