The Onondaga Community College men's soccer team saw its season come to an end on Saturday as the Lazers fell to North Country Community College, 3-1, in the opening round of the NJCAA Region III Championship at a rain-soaked David W. Murphy Field.
With the loss, Onondaga closes out the 2014 campaign with an overall record of 11-8 while the Saints improve to 8-8-2 and will move on to face nationally-ranked Cayuga Community College on Tuesday.
The Lazers would strike first in the 43rd minute when
Kyle Hunt secured a loose ball and ripped one past the Saints' goaltender to give the home team a 1-0 lead at intermission.
The Saints would even things at a goal apiece in the 51st minute and would take the lead for good in the 61st minute after taking advantage of a Lazers' turnover in their own end.
Onondaga has its chances late and even held a man advantage after the Saints were tagged with a red card, but the Lazers weren't able to tie the contest.
North Country would add an insurance goal in the 89th minute and would emerge the winner as the final horn sounded.
Jeff Valencia suffered the loss in net for Onondaga and finished his freshman season at 3-3. He made fives stops in all.
Romeo Kpolo and
Jake Mrowinski tallied three shots apiece and
Ben Jackson took two shots.
