Melissa Bakowski (West Genesee /Warners) of the nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College women’s basketball team has been named the College’s Female Athlete of the Week after playing a key role in three wins for the No. 4 Lazers during the week ending November 9, 2014.
Bakowski nearly averaged a double-double for Onondaga in the three-game span, tallying 11.7 points and nine rebounds per game as the Lazers defeated Genesee Community College before posting back-to-back wins over SUNY Adirondack and Hudson Valley, respectively, to push their season-opening winning streak to five games.
Against Genesee, the Warners native scored 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting from the floor to go along with eight rebounds, two steals and a pair of blocked shots.
Bakowski’s strong play continued in a 79-47 win against the Timberwolves when she scored a team-high 23 points to go along with nine rebounds before contributing two points and 11 rebounds in a 73-44 victory against the Vikings.
The freshman forward has posted eight rebounds or more in all five games this season and is averaging a double-double on the season with 12.6 points and 10 boards per game.
Bakowski and the rest of the women’s basketball team will look to extend their current winning streak to six games at 5 p.m. on Thursday when they host Schenectady Community College in Allyn Hall Gymnasium.
