Kumba Marong (Bronx Leadership Academy/Bronx) of the Onondaga Community College women’s basketball team has been named the College’s Female Athlete of the Week for her outstanding performances in two games during the week ending January 11, 2015.

Marong led Onondaga to a 2-0 record on the week after recording a double-double in each contest, totaling and 24 points and 24 rebounds on the week.

The freshman started the week off strong by grabbing a team-high 12 rebounds to go along with 11 points in an 82-48 road victory over Erie Community College on Wednesday. She then followed that performance up by leading the Lazers in both scoring and rebounding against Corning Community College on Saturday at Allyn Hall. Marong’s 13 points and 12 rebounds against the Red Barons gave Onondaga a 62-49 conference win in its first MSAC contest of the season.

Marong also made a strong defensive contribution during the week for the Lazers by recording seven steals and two blocks over the course of the two contests.

On the season, the Bronx native averages 8.9 points per game and currently leads Onondaga and ranks eighth in the region in rebounds at nine per game.

Marong and the rest of the Lazers will return to action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday when they travel to Binghamton to take on SUNY Broome in their second MSAC game of the season.
