Kumba Marong notched her first-career triple-double as the nationally-ranked Onondaga Community College women's basketball team earned its 10th consecutive win and 78th straight win against Mid-State Athletic Conference opponents on Tuesday after running away from SUNY Broome, 78-55, in the SRC Arena and Events Center.
With the win, the No. 4 Lazers move to 20-4 and remain unbeaten in conference play at 8-0. SUNY Broome falls to 12-7 overall and 6-3 in the conference standings.
Marong finished with 17 points, 14 rebounds and a career-high 10 steals in the win to go along with three assist and a pair of blocks. The triple double was the first for the Lazers since
Jenn Deuel finished with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in the 2014 Region III Championship.Â
Alisia Griffin scored a team-high 23 points while
Brittany Anderson finished with 20 points.Â
Samantha Roberts nearly added a double-double of her own after recording nine points and a career-high 11 assists.
Onondaga began the game aggressively, jumping out to an 8-0 lead before the Hornets could get on the board with a long jumper.
SUNY Broome would climb back into the game, eventually cutting Onondaga's lead to four points, 18-14, but nine unanswered points including six from
Alisia Griffin would stretch the Lazers' lead to 13 points, 27-14, forcing the Hornets to call a timeout to slow the shift in momentum. Â
Samantha Roberts would give the Lazers their largest lead at 15 points before a final possession 3-pointer by the Hornets would send both teams into the locker rooms with Onondaga leading, 37-25.
The Lazers would start the second half on a 16-9 run and never looked back. Onondaga would own a 25-point advantage before the Hornets cut the lead to 23, 78-55, as the final horn sounded.
As a team, the Lazers shot 34-of-72 (.471) from the floor while holding SUNY Broome to 22-of-68 (.324) overall.
The Lazers will look to continue their winning ways at 1 p.m. on Saturday when they host Jefferson Community College in a Mid-State Conference contest from Allyn Hall.
